Earlier this year I was talking to Cecile (a fellow PhD student in Chemical Engineering here at UCSB and she told me she was planning an extended hiking trip in Yosemite this summer. On the spur of the moment I asked her if I could come along and she agreed. Thus began a fun filled trip to one of the great National Parks in California. We experienced fantastic weather including an afternoon thunder/snow/hail/rain storm, which was over almost as quickly as it began and lots and lots of gloriously blue skies. I finally saw my first Yosemite bear (so they really do exist), plenty of deer, snakes, marmots, butterflies and unfortunately (especially for Cecile) biting flies and moskitos. The trip took us from Tolume Meadows down the Tolume river to Pate Valley and the up to several lakes in the high Sierra. Unfortunately we had to cut the trip a little short because of some (un)expected knee problems experienced by Cecile (the second half is on the agenda for next year).
